As a woman, trying on clothes can be depressing. After you've had kids, it's even worse. And I think there are few things that are more torturous that trying on swimsuits after you've had children.
About three years ago, I broke down and got a new swimming suit. I hate how expensive they can be, but my suit at the time was old, sad, and stretched out—a potentially disastrous combo when you're already fighting with gravity anyway. I got a tankini/skirt combo with an extra higher-waisted swimsuit bottom underneath so that no one gets an unfortunate viewing of my belly area. I do like it but I find that I'm always adjusting the top, which can be annoying.
The other night, I went to Target to look for a new tankini top. There was sagging, drooping, and just general unattractiveness. After trying on several, each with worsening results, I gave up and left as quickly as I could. All I have to say is, thank goodness I wasn't trying on bottoms! I bought two cute short-sleeved sweaters to make me feel better.
When I got home, I told my husband that going swimsuit shopping is a mean reminder that my body is broken. "It's not broken!" he said. I said, "Ok, then, damaged? Used? Fallen?"
Take your pick. Any of the above adjectives will work. :)

I swear by Lands' End bathing suits. They are too expensive. But after buying one, every time I try on a Target suit or some other cheaper brand, I end up annoyed and depressed. Lands' End bathing suits are just worth the extra $$. They seem to understand the need for support more than most brands.
The thought of me getting into a swimsuit anytime soon is depressing. I was shopping the other day and looked at them, but did NOT try them on, knowing how mad I would get!! I may just be the spectator at swimming events for the next few months :)
Maybe you should get one of those wonder suits that sucks in and holds up all those different areas. But how about an adjective like SKINNY? I seem to remember you losing all your baby weight FAST? So don't complain too much to all of us who weren't as fortunate! Although thank heavens, I'm getting close....15 months later. But don't worry, the right suit will be flattering. Don't give up!
Yea...if YOUR body is broken, damaged, used, fallen, then what in the heck are the adjectives to describe my body??? I'm not even gonna start thinking about them. You look great miss skinny and I agree with Brooke....target bathing suits bite ...go with Lands End!
Wow, I just caught up on your blog and the last 6 post. Even though I live across the street, I didn't know all this was going on.
You are an amazing person, I wish I could accomplish half of what you do in a day. You look great. i know it is easy for those of us that only see what you want us to see, to say that. My thoughts on swimsuits, is the same as everyone else. They were made to torcher us into thinking we look bad.
Listen to the combined wisdom of sisters and friends. You are beautiful and thin. I have always envied that about you. And now is no different. And I especially agree with the sisters about Lands End suits. The extra money is worth it. The suit will last longer, contain what you want contained and neither sag droop or be unattractive. I still have the suit I bought in 2004 and it looks great. LE is actually having a bunch of sales right now. You could get a good suit cheaper this way.
Remember the power your body has. It is healthy. It has harbored your five beautiful children and nurtured them into this world. No body is meant to look like the media would have you believe. Those women have thousands of dollars and hours of time and STAFF devoted to making sure they look unrealistically perfect. You don't want the life of self-absorption that would be required to look that way. A is right. You are not broken, damaged, used or fallen. If anything you are like the velveteen rabbit--in the process of being loved into realness. You are wonderful and you are real. Remember and chant that when you look into the swimsuit changing mirror!
Wow, so apparently the Turner sisters are big supporters of the Lands End bathing suit line. I had a blue sports tankini from several years ago. LOVED it and wore it out. I broke down last summer and search for another thinking I'd try a different style...I now own a black sports tankini. :)
And don't even get me started on the skinniness that is you, Neelie. It's probably confusing to your friends and in-laws that I'm related to you. And I don't even have the "had a baby or five" excuse!
Lady, I saw you in a bathing suit just a month ago and you look fantastic! You make me want to get this baby out and start working out! You look amazing! But we are all our own worst critics so I know your feelings are legit. Just know you are lookin' good!
My favorite adjective is sacrificed...
Giving up someting good for something better :-)
I like Shade Bathing suits, too. Get a halter-style to keep the girls up. I used to be against Plastic surgery. Now I just say, "Restoration." Please can I just get it RESTORED to what it once was?
